There is now a growing trend of immediate past players being selected to anchor the role of management in football clubs in the modern era. In the past, clubs would prefer to go for managers who are already experienced and have been in the game for some time.
However, with recent managerial appointments of the likes of Ole Gunnar Solskjær at Manchester United, Frank Lampard at Chelsea, Steven Gerrard at Rangers, Andrea Pirlo at Juventus, Gennaro Gattuso at AC Milan, and so on, it looks as though clubs want to now place trust in fresh candidates and allow them to show what they're truly capable of.
