Liverpool are facing a major fight to keep the defender Daniel Agger at the club after it has emerged that Spanish club Barcelona are looking to sign the 27-year-old as a replacement for Carlos Puyol. The club captain for the Spanish club – Carlos Puyol – is coming to the end of his illustrious career with the Catalan club.

Even though the club is mainly looks towards bringing youngsters from the youth academy, they are not prepared to take any risks with the central defensive positions and are looking towards signing an experienced player. The 27-year-old Spanish defender Daniel Agger has emerged as a real transfer target for the club due to his ability to play the ball from the back.

Barcelona have always been a club who have looked for ball playing abilities from the defenders. Daniel Agger is especially known for his skill with the ball, while he is also good for the occasional goals as well. Even though Argentine defender and former Liverpool midfielder Mascherano has been used in this position, it is thought that the new manager Tito Vilanova will be looking to bring in a player to used to playing in this position regularly rather than a makeshift player.

Liverpool could not only lose the services of Daniel Agger in the summer transfer window, but also the likes of Martin Skrtel and Andy Carroll as well. The Slovakian defender Martin Skrtel has been linked with a move away from the club after growing frustrated due to the lack of Champions League football at the club. Andy Carroll, meanwhile, is expected to be sold as part of the new revolution at the club by the former Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers, who was recently appointed by the Liverpool's American owners as a replacement for sacked Kenny Dalglish.
