FANS REJOICE AS DENMARK DEFEATS ICELAND AT HOME AGAIN

Denmark defeated rivals Iceland on Thursday in an international friendly at home. Denmark went into the game with much confidence since they have never lost to Iceland ever.

However, The Red and White as fondly called had lost six games prior to meeting Iceland. The head coach, Age Fridtjof Hareide replaced the former coach and hoped to kick start his coaching career with a great debut.

Denmark had always prevailed against their Iceland counterparts. In the 2002 world cup qualifiers, the danes defeated Iceland by six unreplied goals. In the race for Euro 2008 qualifiers, Denmark went past Iceland, winning by a three goal margin at home and a two goal margin away. In 2012, same Euro qualifiers, Denmark defeated Iceland by a lone goal at home and double of that at Iceland.

On Thursday, two amazing goals from Nicolai Jorgensen within five minutes sealed the game in favor of Denmark. Daniel Agger, defender and captain of the team coordinated the defense but fell to a late consolation goal by Arnor Ingvi Traustason in the 90th minute.

On same Thursday, Italy and Spain played a 1-1 draw in an international friendly at Udine, Italy. On the other hand, two goals from Cenk Tosun helped turkey defeat Sweden.

Iceland had hoped to break the jinx in defeating Denmark. Denmark had been on a winless run spanning six games before meeting Iceland and has failed to keep a clean sheet in the last four games. Iceland also looked at testing preparations for Euro 2016 in France after qualifying for this year’s campaign for the first time ever. They also struggled in previous matches. Iceland played friendly games against United Arab Emirates and United States of America and hoped to fine-tune match play against a familiar foe, Denmark. Whilst the team has more upcoming friendlies against other teams, they would have to try breaking the jinx against Denmark some other time.
