Daniel Agger is a priority target for Barcelona

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger is reportedly being targeted by Barcelona as they look for a top quality defender to shore up the defense. The Catalan giants had long been on the trail of Brazilian international Thiago Silva but now look set to miss out on the player as the former AC Milan man looks set to stay put at his present club Paris saint Germain, having won the league with them last season.

The future of the Danish international has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks with newly rich AS Monaco also said to be keen on the player and it is being believed Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova will push for the player he believes will solve the club’s defensive crisis. Spanish newspapers have suggested that Daniel Agger fits the bill of Barcelona as a perfect ball playing defender, capable of playing his way out trouble at the back and will provide cover for the ageing Carles Puyol whose future remains in doubt after a series of injury ravaged seasons.

Agger was linked with a move to Manchester City last summer but he chose to stay put at Anfield and signed a new contract with the Reds, tying him to the club till 2016 and this means the Catalan club will have to pay a significant transfer fee if they want to lure Liverpool into selling one of their prized assets.

And having already paid a whopping € 57 million to sign Brazilian wonder kid Neymar from Santos, it is worth seeing if Barcelona can afford to pay the high asking price that Liverpool are almost certain to demand for a player who is at the peak of his powers at 28 years of age. But it seems Daniel Agger is a real possibility for the club if they can manage the funds.
