AGGER REJOINS FORMER LIVERPOOL TEAMMATES

Daniel Agger has hailed Liverpool’s defensive lead Virgil van Dijk who recently joined the Reds for £75 million. The 33-year old Dane was very popular in the heart of the defence for Liverpool when he played from 2006-2014.

Agger’s career was blighted by recurrent injuries especially in the latter days but he remained a fan favourite even after leaving Anfield. The veteran surprised at Liverpool’s training camp, turning up to have a nice time with his former teammates.

The retired star, who now spends time in Marbella, said Van Dijk caught his eye. He described the former Southampton man to Livescore Liverpool as “a really strong player.” He is impressed by how the defender has performed so far despite the difficult move to Liverpool.

Agger wishes that Van Dijk brings out the best out of those he plays with. For now he remains happy with the performances of the Dutchman.

The august visitor also commented on the quality of attackers at the club. He said if he were an active defender it would be difficult facing the current top notch attackers. He praised the trio of Mohammed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane. He adds that every time Liverpool have the ball and are moving forward, it is dangerous. He says this is important for any team as it helps them back into a game even if they have conceded.

Agger was happy to meet briefly with the players even though he has not really played with most of the players. He was pictured with Red skipper Jordan Henderson at Marbella Football Center, Spain.

The Liverpool fan as he called himself said he was impressed with the performance against Porto in the Champions League, adding that everyone in football knows what the Reds can do now.

AGGER: MY STORY MAY HELP OTHER

The former Liverpool defender opens up on his overuse of anti-inflammatory drugs and the day in 2015 when his body had simply had enough.

The first thing Daniel Agger remembers is that he was unable to control his body. He did not feel any pain but he was just lying there shaking. Earlier that day, on 8th of March, he had led out Brøndby to face their rivals FC Copenhagen in a Danish league game. He lasted 29 minutes before being taken off. He then collapsed and was taken to the physiotherapist’s room at Parken.

He should never have played. He was carrying a knock from the week before and, like so many times in his career, he took a lot of anti-inflammatories, far more than the recommended dosage, and his body had had enough. His time at Liverpool, fighting for points at the top of the Premier League table, and playing in games that were regularly watched by sell-out crowds of over 50,000 people probably didn’t help. According to one website, he played in 5 of the 10 most in-demand matches for tickets throughout his time in the English Premier League – games that fans were desperate to see, and players were desperate to feature in.

He stopped taking anti-inflammatories that day and this summer, having quit football in May, aged 31, the Danish paper Jyllands-Posten published a series of interviews with the player, conducted over a two-year period, in which he opened up about his career and what he put his body through in order to play.

Agger played for Liverpool from 2006 to 2014 before rejoining Brøndby to play for another two seasons. He played 384 games in total, 232 games for Liverpool, 77 for Brøndby and 75 for Denmark – but his body gradually broke down. He now has pain in his back all the time and estimates that he was able to perform to only 70% or 80% of his capacity during his last two seasons at Liverpool and at an even lower level at Brøndby.

Agger’s main problem was he was hypermobile, meaning his joints overextended. He also started having back problems as early as 2007, which were exacerbated by an awkward fall during a pre-season trip to Thailand in 2008.

Daniel Agger spent eight years at Liverpool between 2006 and 2014 making a total of 232 appearances in that time.

AGGER ENDS FOOTBALL CAREER

At 31, Daniel Agger, the former Liverpool defender, eventually declared his retirement from football. The Denmark international played for good eight years at Liverpool having joined The Reds from 2006 till 2014 from Brondby IF, before leaving to Liverpool to same, where he announced his requirement.

The center back wrote on Twitter: “Thank you for your support. A great experience. It is sad, but it is the right decision to stop. I am proud of my career.”

He helped Liverpool get to the UEFA Champions League final in 2007 before losing to AC Milan, and also won the now EFL cup under coach Kenny Dalglish’s leadership in 2012.
The ex-Brondby IF defender was part of the team which came close to ending the Liverpool’s long wait for an English Premier League title during his final season with the club as Man City took the glory with two points.

The Denmark international who featured at both the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine, subsequently returned to Brondby IF, and signed a two-year contract which significantly reduced his wages.

Agger has now ended his football career when he believed it was time to make such decision which seems like a relatively early age due to his battles with frequent injuries throughout his time in football. The first full season he made at Anfield, in 2006/07, was the only time he appeared more than 40 times for the club in a single season.

The Reds fans as expected reacted to the retirement news by paying tribute to Agger on social media, specifically twitter. He made a total of two hundred and ninety nine [299] senior appearances during his career, finding the net a total of twenty one (21) times.

PAINKILLERS HAUNT AGGER

Daniel Agger confesses that the cause of the health problems he had during his Brondby stint was the huge number of pain killers he had consumed through the past years.

Recalling the game during which he had lost his consciousness, Agger reveals that he had a total of four painkillers that day from the time he had gotten up from the bed to the time he had stepped into the team bus and the tablets had such an effect on him that he didn’t understand when his eyes closed and he slept as he was on his way to the stadium.

He immediately asked for caffeine as he reached the stadium, but, even that didn’t help him get rid of the dizziness and he was struggling to get through even the light warm up session ahead of the game.

Agger says once he returned from warm up, he just wanted to sit and not move. Still, he wore his jersey and came to the field with his teammates, but, in that kind of condition, there was no way he was going to last that match.

On an occasion in the match when he attempted a header, instead of hitting his head, the ball hit one of his hands and finally, a few minutes later, he had to make the admission that he could not stay in the middle anymore.

As per Agger, after the match, when he met his better half, her reaction was nothing. Not a word was spoken by her, not a single word and it was because he had ignored her advice many a times. She was always concerned about him taking so many pain killers and asked him not to do that, but, he did not listen at all.

BRONDBY FANS HAIL DANIEL AGGER

These days it is very common for players to move from one club to another throughout their career. It seems increasingly difficult for academy prospects o make first team and build careers long term at a club.

Expensive signings that are established elsewhere are the norm in a bid to fast track success of top and aspiring clubs. When players underperform, they are quickly shipped out. Fans of Brondby took to social media to thank one of their notable players that returned after his exploits in elsewhere.

Daniel Munthe Agger is one of the dying breed of footballers that have patience and loyalty embedded in them. He left his boyhood club Brondby IF for £6 million in the transfer window in 2006 with Rafa Benitez welcoming him to Anfield. It was easy to join Liverpool after their stunning Champions League win over AC Milan – joining them wasn’t really much of a gamble (unlike playing at the netbet casino) as he knew that Liverpool would be competing at the top of the game for the next few years.

Agger spent over eight years at Merseyside, becoming a fan favourite despite a lot of challenges. He is renowned for his famous left foot and his confidence in moving to the midfield with the ball before sending a well timed pass. His aerial strength had limitations and he was not as pacey, but he did his job well. Several injuries throughout his career constrained him from reaching his true potential. He recently acknowledged to taking too many anti inflammatory pills during his career after he retired this year.

His fitness concerns weren’t a problem when he was at Denmark but started when he arrived at England. He missed out of the 2006 FC Cup win over West Ham as he was out injured. His struggle with metatarsal injury ruled him out of most games in the next season.

When he picked up and impressed, many clubs came calling but he remained loyal. His physical condition worsened very early due to the injuries. His relation with Brendan Rodgers led to a breakdown in 2014 and his subsequent transfer from the club. he returned to Brondby after a decade out, gaining the respect of fans eternally.

AGGER SET FOR AC MILAN?

Daniel Agger is set to join Italian club side AC Milan. The media was rife with reports last week that the Denmark international had agreed to rejoin Rafa Benitez at Newcastle. Benitez couldn’t save Newcastle as they were relegated from the English Premier League but he agreed to help the club regain their tier one status despite having the clause in his contract that he was not obligated to do so.

Benitez sought to add centre back Daniel Agger to his Championship side but current reports say the former Liverpool man will join AC Milan instead. According to TalkSport, the 31-year-old Dane has been approached by the Serie A giants about a Bosman deal, especially as his current deal with Brondby expires at the end of the month.

Agger rejoined his boyhood club in 2014 after he had issues with then Liverpool Manager Brendan Rodgers. He started with the Brondby Under-19 squad back in the day before his move to the senior team in 2004. He impressed in the senior team for a year until the Reds swoop him in the 2005/2006 season where he played until his exit. Milan currently have the ageing Alex and Italian Andrea Poli at the back, but Agger would arrive to compete with that pair for a starting spot.

Milan have been struggling with getting the results in recent seasons aside having managerial problems. They finished in the seventh spot last season being 34 points off the league leaders in Juventus, even though they had started the season as one of the favourites to land the title – the StanJames Serie A betting had them at just 4/1.

They did have a real shot at a silverware when they played Juve in the Italian Cup Final but they lost again. Now they have billionaire backers and are looking at joining the elites to compete for titles.

Though Agger’s form has dropped over the years, it still remains a surprise why Milan want him to join them. Agger once turned down offers from Barcelona and Manchester City to stay with Liverpool but lots of injuries over the years have taken toll on the player.

HAREIDE TARGETS WINS

Age Hareide has just taken charge of the Danish National side and has only had a couple of days of training with the squad, but, despite that, he wants victories in the friendly games that lie ahead.

The first of those games is against Iceland which will be played at MCH Arena against Iceland. The FIFA rankings have Denmark and Iceland situated very close to each other and also, man-to-man, one wouldn’t be able to choose too much out of the two squads. The latest odds at StanJames suggest that the bookmakers don’t know which way it will go either!?

Maybe, the home advantage for Denmark makes them the favourites, but, then, they have seen quite an unsuccessful recent period and they have had hardly any time to get along with the new head coach.

To say farewell to Olsen who had been there for almost 15 years and then, adapt to somebody else’s way straightaway without even spending that much of time with him, it’s hard. But, for Hareide, the lack of time together is not an excuse and regardless of whatever has been the scenario, the Red and White will go out there for the victory.

In the words of Hareide, “No matter how much time has been there for the manager to gel with the players or the players to gel with the manager, a team should always look to try and beat the opposition. That can be the only reason for stepping out there on the pitch.”

“I agree that a bit of time is required for everything to get in right shape, but, the mentality that you carry, it makes a lot of difference. If you have got the positive mentality, you are more likely to progress quickly. I hope these couple of friendly games that we are playing back-to-back will set us up quite well to go into the qualifiers.”

ITALY CALLING

This might be Daniel Agger’s last season in the English top flight as the 29 years old centre-back is believed to be interested in making a move to Italy.

Napoli might be his next destination if the reports coming through have truth in them.

The man who is in charge at Napoli at the moment is Rafael Benitez with whom Agger has worked in the past and the duo’s relationship is brilliant. So, the Danish international would surely have more opportunities to play there.

The second thing is that Napoli is more likely to qualify for the Champions League than Liverpool at this point of time. So, by moving to Stadio San Paolo, Agger would give himself a better chance of featuring in the Champions League next season.

Agger had been the first choice centre-back for Liverpool in the last couple of seasons, but, this season, he has fallen down the pecking order as a couple of other quality defenders have joined the Reds camp.

In the ongoing season, Agger has made only 13 appearances for Liverpool so far and that’s quite a bit less than the no. of appearances he used to make previously.

However, recently, Brendan Rodgers, the Liverpool boss, has lost a couple of his vital defensive options because of injuries and right now, his defence looks a bit shaky. So, it’s hard to imagine that he would weaken his defence even more by letting Agger go. It would be really interesting to see what happens in the next few days in that regard.

As far as Agger’s overall stats at Liverpool is concerned, he has played a total of 166 league matches for the club till now and has found the back of the net 8 times.

SAKHO SETTLING IN

Mamadou Sakho, who was brought into Liverpool for close to £ 20 million, has said that he is starting to get settled to life at Anfield. The former Paris St Germain defender is regarded as someone with a huge potential. The 23-year-old fell out with his former club and decided to move to Merseyside despite the fact that Liverpool were not capable of offering him Champions League football. Brendan Rodgers had guided Liverpool to seventh place last season and things were not looking good for the club.

However, they have made a stunning start to the campaign and are just a few points below the top of the table after Christmas. Sakho has been a first-team regular during this period and it is something that has surprised many. Sakho was expected to struggle during the initial years at the club especially due to the dominance of Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel as the centre back combination. The presence of Kolo Toure, who is someone experienced with Premier league football, has also made it difficult for Sakho to succeed at Anfield, but he has overcome such obstacles to establish himself.
Sakho says that he has signed a four-year contract with the club, which he intends to honour.

“At the moment I am very happy in Liverpool. I signed for four years and I will try to write my own piece of Liverpool history. I hope that in the coming years we will win many titles. Difficulties to adapt are normal – I have changed my team-mates, language, everything is a little trickier. But everything seemed logical and the move made sense. We have a group with four international central defenders so we take it in turns,” said Sakho.

Sakho has also revealed that he does not regret having left PSG, who he supported as a boy.

BARCA WANT AGGER

Daniel Agger is a transfer target of Barcelona as the Catalan team tried to lure him from Liverpool in the past summer but the Premier League side managed to keep him in the club although questions are being raised on how long he will remain with Liverpool as not only Barcelona but also Napoli are interested in securing his services.

“I’m not saying I wasn’t tempted, because anyone would be in that situation, but for the club to say that to me was enough. I am happy here and my family is happy here also and that’s a good combination.” That was the statement from Agger as he remained with Liverpool in summer.

It is believed that Rafael Benitez is going to attempt bringing Agger to Napoli in January as the team is willing to pay him £3.5 million per season.

Agger has made 8 appearances for Liverpool this season as he has had tough competition against the likes of: Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure as all the players are challenging him for his spot in the starting XI.

Tata Martino and Rafael Benitez both want to take advantage of his current situation in Liverpool as his lack of matches can be a motivation for him to make a switch to a new club and Napoli alongside Barcelona will surely be leading the charge to sign him in January.

In 13 games this season, Liverpool has conceded just four in six of the games that Daniel Agger has started, and 12 in the seven that he hasn’t. This is a huge sign that the 28 years old Danish defender makes a big impact and influence for his club as they seem to defend better whenever he plays.
