AGGER: 2006 COMMUNITY SHIELD REVIEWED

Daniel Agger was an important member of the Liverpool squad that won the 2006 Community Shield in his first full season at Anfield. The Danish centre back had signed for Liverpool in January 2006 from boyhood club Brondby in a £6m deal, but injuries restricted him to just four games until the end of the season. His injury issues ensured that Agger missed out on the 2006 FA Cup title win made possible by the penalty shootout win over London team West Ham United. Liverpool came from a two-goal deficit to share six goals with the Hammers at the end of normal time. The two teams failed to score in extra time before Liverpool triumphed during penalty shootout to win the FA Cup title.

With his injury issues behind him, Agger was able to establish himself in the Liverpool starting XI in his first full season at the club as from the 2006 Community Shield. The 2006 Community Shield was contested between Liverpool (FA Cup winners) and Chelsea (league winners).

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez started Daniel Agger at the heart of his defence alongside Jamie Carragher. Liverpool took the lead through Norwegian left-back John Arne Riisebut they could not hold on to the lead until the end of the first half. Chelsea levelled proceedings through Ukrainian star Andriy Shevchenko just a minute before the half-time interval. The game was heading for penalties before Peter Crouch struck for Liverpool ten minutes before the end of the game. The goal from Crouch ensured that him and his Liverpool teammates celebrated the 2006 Community Shield at the expense of Jose Mourinho and his Chelsea players.
Agger won just two trophies during his time at Liverpool and the 2006 Community Shield was one of those two trophies. He also won the League Cup title during the 2011/12 season.
